MILAN, 7 April 2010 - Just like Inter legend Helenio Herrera, or Mancini who went out of the quarter finals against Liverpool. With five straight Champions League victories, Inter has set a new record by reaching the semifinals. Something similar happened twice before in the big competition of the year: to repeat one would be perfect, the other not a bit less. Mourinho's track record sits between the two but the example he's aiming at is Inter from 1963-64: the run of successes came to a halt in the first leg of the semifinals, but was followed nevertheless by the cup: this was the club's first (of two, as they took it again the next year).
MOURINHO and MANCINI — The five victorious steps this season started with the final game in the group stage: a home victory with Rubin Kazan, the second in San Siro against Chelsea (2-1), number three was the 1-0 at Stamford Bridge then the two games against CSKA. CSKA was also part of the last 5-strong run in 2007-08, when Mancini was on the bench and Ibrahimovic in the middle of the team's forwards. But that was during the group stage, after the initial loss against Fenerbahçe, therefollowed the 2-0 against Psv, two victories over the Russians, revenge against the Turkish squad, and final game in Holland, with a goal from Cruz. A perfect progression, until the quarter finals: they lost twice to Liverpool going out of the competition.
PAST LEGENDS — Examples in the much more distant past are more promising, and actually a lot closer to the current reality. There was no group stage in those days, but victories came from the second leg of the last 16 stage to the second leg of the quarter finals. Jair brought Everton to their knees in Milan after the opening leg 0-0, Ciccolo in the first leg, Mazzola and Suarez in the return leg together wiped out Monaco (1-0, then 1-3 in the away match). Sandro Mazzola saw "a team very capable of playing well. They have a fantastic organization and great spirit. Barcelona should look out. They have already played Inter and Mourinho had the chance to study them carefully. I think they have a 50/50 chance." Luis Suarez is of the same opinion: "In these competitions, the teams get tougher and tougher. The semifinal will be hard, but that applies to Barcelona too." They've been looking for their Neroazzurri heirs for 50 years. In order to break another record: the number of Champions League victories.
